# Pulsar ## Overview Pulsars are rotating [[Neutron Star|neutron stars]] that with a strong magnetic field (see [[Magnetar|magnetars]]) that emit electromagnetic radiation out of their poles. As they rotate, the radiation can be detected from [[Earth]] and used to determine the rotation rate of the star. The speed at which pulsars rotate can vary wildly, but there exist some that spin at insane rates, such as [PSR J1748−2446ad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSR_J1748%E2%88%922446ad), which spins at just over **714 Hz**! ![[neutron_star_types.png]] #astrophysics #space
